The Hispanic Association of Colleges and
Universities (HACU) is a national association of higher education institutions and based
in San Antonio, Texas. Established in 1986, the association represents more than 200
colleges and universities that collectively enroll 2/3 of all Hispanics in higher
education.
HACU represents Hispanic-Serving
Institutions (HSIs) where Hispanics constitute a minimum of 25 percent of the total
enrollment at either the graduate or undergraduate level and Associate members where
Hispanics constitute a minimum of 10 percent of the total enrollment. HACU-member
institutions are located in the United States and Puerto Rico. In 1996, HACU initiated an
international membership program and currently represents universities in Latin America.
Promote the development of member colleges and universities; improve access to and the
quality of postsecondary educational opportunities for Hispanic students; and meet the
needs of business, industry and government through the development and sharing of
resources, information and expertise.
What is an HSI?
"Hispanic-Serving Institution" is defined as an
institution having 25 percent or more Hispanic enrollment, according to the 1992
Reauthorization of the Higher Education Act.
Activities
*Information Sharing and Public Policy Analysis
Increase the participation of HSIs in the formulation of national education policies and
inform federal legislators and government agencies, corporations, foundations, the media
and the general public about Hispanics in higher education and about the critical role of
HSIs.
*Resource Targeting through Partnerships Facilitate
access to grants, contracts and support for HACU-member institutions through collaborative
agreements and special programs.
*HSI Capacity Building
To pursue support fi.om governmental, philanthropic, and corporate sectors to enhance
the capabilities of HSls to meet the higher education needs of Hispanic-Americans.
*Educational Programs
Sponsor national workshops, seminars, and conferences on topics such as financial aid,
student recruitment and retention. Facilitate pilot projects addressing dropout prevention
and college preparation to improve Hispanic graduation rates. Encourage linkages between
colleges/universities and precollegiate school systems.
Funding
Institutional membership dues, corporate and foundation support,
gifts from individuals, contract programs, and consulting services. (HACU is a nonprofit,
tax-exempt, 501(c3) organization.)
